Hello from Canton

Post by cantondude »

Greetings from Canton NC. I have been a fan of the 501st since I heard about them several years ago. I really don't have much costuming experience (unless you count bed sheet jedi) and was wanting to know where a good place to start was. I've looked at several forums on stormtrooper costumes however, I'm afraid they wouldn't fit someone my size (I'm 6'7 and weigh about 310 lbs). Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Landon

Welcome Landon! The 501st had more branches than just stormtroopers. Take a look at all the possibilities there are and decide which you like best. Feel free to all any questions you have!

Welcome man! How about those Republic commandos, Scorch, and Fixer and such. I know some bigger troopers and they rock those rigs. And they really look great.... Also, some of the Reserve tie pilots and crewman are good inexpensive starts to the legion. Have fun man, and good luck!

That little ditty about Canton made me chuckle (I'm still begging my wife and mom to make me a Jayne hat). I hadn't thought about a Republic Commando. After looking at a few photos of them I think a bigger guy like myself would look pretty good in that style of armor. Now to start the quest for republic commando armor info and the funds to help secucure it :). I've also been looking a Pepakura RC builds. Does anyone have any experience using Pepakura for thier armor builds?(I may go this route in case the funds aren't there, lousy daycare eating all my hobby money…) Thanks again for the quick responses and all the help and advice.

I've seen a guy tackle the pep build for an RC. 2 words for you -GOOD LUCK! Seriously that file is beyond huge and more than a pain. Look up Polymer Armory. He makes Commando armor and he's right here in NC. I think a full suit will run you $700 (minus the boots, gloves and undersuit).

Thanks Zechs. After looking at those files you're 100% correct. Those things are huge and after watching the tutorials on how to make armor with that program…yikes…def. beyond my skill level. Polymer Armory (if the website is still accurate) is just one town west of here form where I'm at so that's cool. I never knew there were so many Star Wars fans and resources in the area.

Nice, they are approvable through the rebel legion, as well as the 501st. Not that you have too, but some members like dual membership. Just don't let the Emporer find out!

For some reason, Durge comes to mind. Through he fought for the CIS, he is a 501st listing too:
http://www.501st.com/databank/Costuming:BH_Durge

At 6' 7", that would be imposing!

With that size, I am wondering what would be the best use of "presence." I'm 6'2" and tower over most, But, you'd tower over me.

My knowledge of the Expanded Universe is more limited.

I sent polymer armory an email with some question about the armor. Has anyone gotten their armor from them? Were you satisfied with it? From the photos on their website they do amazing work, just wanted to know from someone who's conducted business with them.

I know a couple people from Garrison Tyranus that have their armor they love it and have actually bought another set. It also looks great on them.

Cool, from what I can tell Polymer Armory does great work. Good to know everyone that has conducted business with them is satisfied. xapologiesx, I may take you up on that offer once I kind of get the ball rolling. I really like those RC armor sets but, I'm afraid they may be out of my price range at the moment. I've been looking at Tie Pilot and technical crew costumes since they are a little less expensive. Any suggestions on those as it seems they are the same costume with the Tie Pilot having the armor and helmet in place of the cap.

I did it in reverse (JRS first, then here).
