Pinehurst new guy
Recent forum lurker from Pinehurst. I've spent most of my adult life in the 1:6 hobby customizing figures, but have always been an admirer of the 1:1 costuming world. Looking forward to continued research, and possibly after returning to the states from a future trip across the Atlantic, getting started on a lot of my own. It was recommended on the whitearmor and MEPD forums to go ahead and reach out to the local garrisons for that extra push in the right direction.

Welcome. I see you mentioned MEPD. Looking to do a Sandtrooper?

Sandtroopers have been my favorite since I was a kid, so naturally I've been gravitating towards that in this costuming world. Just got my first ATA helmet from the FISD forum last week, I can't wait to get my armor in once I get back stateside post next trip. Might use the extra helmet as the Guinea pig for the sandtrooper leap of faith.

Cool. I've dove in and did my Sandtrooper (TD) right from the start. A lot of members eventually turn their TK into a dirty Sandy but I skipped that step. Haha
You bought an ATA helmet? It's a nice kit. I recently had the opportunity to assemble one for a friend in the Garrison. Paint and all. It's a nice kit. Requires lots of trimming especially getting the two helmet pieces to come together properly but it worked out in the end.
Here's the ATA kit I assembled a few months ago (and hand-painted).

That looks great so far, very clean paint too. I got mine prebuilt, a member on FISD was parting with one complete for $250 shipped so I just went ahead and grabbed it. I've been in contact with AM2.0 and AP about armor, so when I finally pull the trigger it'll end up being one of those two most likely. I'll probably end up jumping right into a sandy as well. With the ATA bucket I currently have on hand I've already started brainstorming what I want to do to the inside regarding black paint, fans, voice mic, hearing assist etc. But I've got nothing but time here in the near future, since I'll be out of town a few months it gives me a lot of time to web research and acquire pieces.

Personally...I don't think you have to paint the inside black. Once you're in there and have on your balaclava and stuff....it'll be pretty dark in there. I have (2) 12V squirrel fans mounted into the face (below the frown) to help blow air on my lenses to keep them from fogging. Even though I've been wearing my armor for over 3 years...I still have to wiggle my head in and around the fans to get the helmet on. I highly recommend installing a fan system of sorts in your bucket. Too many times I've either had batteries die on me or it was a humid outdoor event and the fans do wonders with helping you to see.
