Soa ESB Fett build

Post by Soa »

I'm seeking some guidance and feedback from the Garrison Fetts. I've finally gotten serious about getting this together and have been busy the last week.
I'm looking for critiques and feedback on my painting. Since I lack all artistic skills and the first time I used a paint brush or air brush was when I started this build I'm sure you good peoples can find plenty to help me out with.

I'll start with the parts I'm the least happy with, the knees
Image

Image

Try as I may I can't seem to get the look of them right, it just seems off.

I am pretty happy with the shoulder pieces, but what do I know, I'm a Fett noob

Image

Image

The armor and cod pieces seem to be decent enough but I know there is room for improvement

I may have gone a little overboard on the weathering of the flight suit, I was going for really dirty

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome. The armor pieces look great. On the knee armor I done the yellow orange ton when I first done mine. But later to find out they are more orange tint. Here's what I ended up with. Image

I agree, more orange tone, also you can paint the dents and damage first let it dry then cover it with toothpaste or mustard. Let it dry then spray your yellow / orange tone paint. when all is dry wipe off the area you covered and it gives you more effect as far as damage. Also a real lite spray or mist of black gives it a weathered look. Hope this helps. :bobafett:

Thanks guys, I've masked off some of the areas and I'm going to mist over the yellow a bit more

Looking good. I agree with the Orange tone, just slightly. And also as mentioned using liquid latex, or toothpaste to mask off jagged edges and battle damage. Take off a bit with each layer.

Take your time and ask questions. You are doing great.

I got an RS Props ROTJ Fett recently, 2nd hand, and I am amazed at how much latex masking I am still pulling off the armor. It's been worn a couple of times since thet shipped it 2 years ago. As expensive as it is, you would think they'd pay more attention to details like that. I prefer the toothpaste/mustard to latex any day.

I am also surprised by how thin all the vac-formed parts are. It's thinner than an Anovos TK. I am backing most of it with fiberglass before I try to wear it and break something. That means I will probably end up having to repaint a bunch too. So, I am commenting here to get notifications and see your updates.

Good luck to us both!

Mine are vac formed but most part pretty durable. I do have a crack in my cod piece. Chalk that up for battle damage. I don't see why a thin layer of fiberglass could hurt. Might be a good idea

As far as I can tell the durability shouldn't be an issue, it seems to be thick enough.
After my last post I discovered liquid masking and it made life so much easier. I do find that I have to remember where I applied it after painting.
I sanded down the right knee and repainted it, I'm still not 100% happy with it but it'll do. The orange doesn't show up to well in the pictures but it's in there.

I took the time from the last post to further trim everything down to be closer to where it's supposed to be. I had a lot of extra material I had to get rid of.

I'm planning on using magnets to attach the armor pieces to the vest. I have some Velcro that I'll sew into place on the inside of the vest to hold the other magnets so I'll always know the proper placement. That's the theory anyway.
I have JB weld on the magnets right now so I should be able to get a test fit this weekend.

My helmet arrived last week, I got it from a guy on the dented helmet.

The last big piece I'm waiting on is the jet pack, I'm hoping to get it within the next week or two so I can get it painted before I leave for Arizona for six weeks.

Good news on the jet pack, it will be shipping tomorrow. Painting will start on that next weekend. After that it's just waiting on machine craft replicas for their metal parts and the beacon light from JC27.
The harness frame should be shipping soon as well so that should take care of that.

That's good news for all! The helmet looks [THUMBS UP SIGN]. I have magnets on my armor because every time you think it's where it needs to be you have to move one piece just a little to the left or to the right

Coming together. I prefer the latex over toostpaste , for one because it dries and won't rub off by accident. Plus it leaves a nice glossy sheen on my teeth... :D

I'm always tinkering with the placement of things, I figured magnets would be a better fit for me than pins or bolts.

While not super exciting, it's still progress.
My servo kit and aluminum flamethrower came in yesterday so I was able to do some more work on the gauntlets. Once I get the rocket from machine craft replicas I should be complete with them. I can finish wiring up the right gauntlet and slap the hinges on.

Getting the Alco switches in was a bigger pain than I expected. I had holes drilled that fit the push button part perfectly when I realized they didn't stick out far enough. I had to go in and carve out a much bigger opening to push them through. I used epoxy to fill in the gaps and hold them in place.
I'm happy with the way they came out and I'll go back and repaint over some of the epoxy to take the shine off and even the look out

Weekend update:

The jetpack arrived today so I did some trimming and painting. I got the silver base layer put on most of the parts.
I drilled the holes for the thrusters and attached the pieces on those.

Image

Image

Saturday the sidearm came in, I assembled it and put the base layer on it before realizing I needed to sand it down more.

I ran into a problem with keeping the magnets attached to the armor. JB weld wasn't bonding to the plastic so I switched to a contact cement. It seems to be working so far, I had to glue another one that popped off. That's why one of the chest pieces isn't on yet.

Image

Still working on the gauntlets, I'm trying to figure out how to fit the remote transmitter and the LED light inside.

Image

Eventually I'll finish everything, I bounce from part to part on the build

I found myself sucked into The Secret World Legends for the last week so things really slowed down for a bit. However I finally finished getting the jetpack together and painted
Image

Next up is finishing up the chest display and figuring out how I want to mount it. After that I'll finally get around to getting the knee darts installed
