Backstory... It's all you.
The costume only has to be screen accurate, but any kind of back story would be all up to you... No one monitors that per SE.
Now, granted, you'll probably want it to be family friendly, but it's up to you.
Some folks have a backstory, some don't. It's whatever you prefer.
